Pre-Fall Fashion Collection 2010 of Miu Miu at Paris Fashion Show

Pre-Fall fashion collection 2010 of Miu Miu at Paris fashion show:  If you didn’t already know that Miuccia Prada thinks of Miu Miu as an expression of her inner girl, you’d probably be able to guess it from the label’s pre-fall collection. With its narrow-shouldered plaid jackets, tiny little matching skirts, and girly knee-high knit socks, it had a sincere feel for the nymphet dolly birds who populated long-forgotten pop flicks like Joanna and The Touchables back when Prada was in her teens. It wasn’t only the abbreviated proportions of the tops and skirts—or their school uniform-y correctness—where the sixties made their presence felt. Pants were narrow-cut, flared, and cuffed—very Miss London. And the wool used is apparently, in Italy at least, irrevocably associated with that decade. But nothing is ever so literal in Pradaworld.

To anyone who couldn’t care less what girls wore Back Then, the re-proportioned duffel/parka hybrids were an adorable now-ish take on outerwear. Anyway, mixing time and place is a Prada specialty, and it was more forties glam than sixties pop that insinuated itself into the collection’s use of fur (as tippetlike collars or as the sleeves on a jacket) or into the leopard-printed sheepskin jacket.

Pre-Fall Fashion Collection 2010 of Roberto Cavalli at London Fashion Show

Pre-Fall fashion collection 2010 of Roberto Cavalli at London fashion show: With high-necked lace blouses, jet beading, and funereal black capelets on one hand, and tight little tailored jackets, ribbed leggings, and knee-high boots on the other, Roberto Cavalli’s pre-fall collection felt like an unholy union of Queen Victoria and Pat Benatar.

Resort Fashion Collection 2010 of Basso & Brooke at Milan Fashion Show

Resort fashion collection 2010 of Basso & Brooke at Milan fashion show: With Michelle Obama as a new fan, Bruno Basso and Christopher Brooke are about to get an attention boost. So it was good timing that their Resort collection offered an accessible introduction to their world.

Pre-Fall Fashion Collection 2010 of Alberta Ferretti at New York Fashion Show

Pre-Fall fashion collection 2010 of Alberta Ferretti at New York fashion show: Alberta Ferretti may be the go-to designer for pretty chiffon gowns, but she injected some edge into her signature feminine silhouettes in her new pre-fall collection. A strong Helmut Newton girl—that perennial fashion inspiration—was the starting point, evident in a dark, moody palette that included black leather skirts, jackets, and body-hugging dresses. Ferretti even played with chains, stringing them like tassels across the shoulders of merino sweaters and a ruched jersey number. When a sheer blouse did pop up, it was paired with a structured charcoal wool pencil skirt. Ironically, fashion as a whole may be moving away from the hard-edged look, but in Ferretti’s case, the juxtaposition of soft and strong gave her latest effort a welcome depth. We can’t all be actresses with red-carpet appearances every night.

Resort Fashion Collection 2010 of Emilio Pucci at New York Fashion Show

Resort fashion collection 2010 of Emilio Pucci at New york fashion show: Peter Dundas’ mission for Resort was twofold—to take the Emilio Pucci girl to the seaside and to firm up the new image that he began establishing at the house for Fall.

Resort Fashion Collection 2010 of Giorgio Armani at New York Fashion

Resort fashion 2010 of Giorgio Armani at New York fashion: Giorgio Armani continued the exploration of eighties style that he began in earnest with his Fall collection, except this time around he did it with bright colors and bold geometric prints instead of his accustomed shades of gray.

It made for a lively change of pace that might win him some new converts, and at the very least, these clothes should appeal to his many fans’ youthful sides. It’s hard to resist the allure of a purple polka-dot print mini-caftan and its associations with the Italian Riviera and other glamorous destinations. But for those not quite ready to don an electric blue shorts suit or a bustier dress with a panel of fireworks sequins on the front, there were some pinstriped pantsuits in the mix. Take note, though—the pinstripes are pink.

Resort Fashion 2010 of Vera Wang at New York Fashion Show

Resort fashion 2010 of Vera Wang at New York fashion show: Vera Wang cheekily called Resort her “Calypso-meets-Intermix” collection. What the reference to those eclectic boutiques means is this: Not only are there more colors—safety orange, peacock blue, chartreusethan in the designer’s last several seasons combined, but the line is also chock-full of item-y pieces like slouchy, whisper-thin cardigans; lace shorts; and all manner of T-shirts and tanks for her customers to mix and match. The inspiration, Wang explained, came from her daughters, who are fond of wearing long tees over short shorts, and the lineup did have a more youthful sensibility than her runway shows. Save for the daisy chain necklaces, embellishments were for the most part pared down, and her signature voluminous silhouette has been likewise streamlined. The key piece was the one Wang herself wore to the CFDA Awards earlier this week: an olive gold sequin racer-back tank dress over a sleeveless white cotton T-shirt.

Fall Fashion Collection 2010 of DKNY at New York Fashion Show

Fall Fashion collection 2010 of DKNY at New York fashion show: As much as Donna Karan has an issue with fashion’s seasonal system and off-kilter deliveries, she’s definitely not one for the “seasonless” route some designers take. As much as last Spring’s collection was clean and breezy, today’s show spilled over with layers and layers of cold-weather-appropriate wares.

The overall look here was sixties schoolgirl. Nearly every skirt on these side-ponytailed lasses was mini and pleated, some in wool and others in a thick leather that pushed the vibe out of decades past (tasseled loafers, now transformed into aggressive platforms, did the same). Those kicky skirts were worn with long, oversize wool coats—a notch more outsize than the boyfriend blazer—little tailored jackets, or cardigans and turtlenecks. To finish off, there were long scarves, astrakhan newsboys, and ankle socks or woolen tights. The outerwear was especially strong. Highlights: a gray hooded toggle coat and boyfriend-tailored vest coats that kept the layering polished and cool.

Balmain Homme Hiver 2010/2011
